Phenomenology
Phenomenology
Phenomenology is ones experience of architecture, When visiting a different building you haven’t been before, its that initial thought which you then process into your memory such as the shape, texture, color, temperature, sound, size etc. these are all factors which effect an experience for good and bad. Depending on these factors will determine whether you choose to re visit this place from whether it was a pleasant experience or one you will not return to. Its Important for an Architect to understand the Phenomenology as visual architect may be able to design something that looks pleasing but there are other aspects which have to be taken into serious consideration of the design.

“the current over-emphasis on the intellectual and conceptual dimensions of architecture contributes to the disappearance of its physical, sensual and embodied essense and that contemporary architecture needed to intensify material qualities of weight & texture”
In this quote what Pallasmaa’s is referring to is how in current architecture the physical and sensual side has become lost to a more formal modern approach to architecture, and rather taking into account feelings and emotion it has become purely evolved around the sole purpose of the function of the building.
For Example when coliseums were designed, the purpose of its scale was to intimidate those about to enter, the large walls surrounding the circled arena gave the sense of being trapped and helpless.
For architecture to take full affect one must first grasp the sense of feeling when inside the buildings. The material must work with the architectural design to hold the persons full attention.
Although Pallasmaa’s reference to modern architecture is true to a certain extent, what also needs taking into account is how architecture is developing as a whole. The material to modern designs have become more purposeful rather a sense of beauty in earlier architectural design, I believe this to be the experimental stages leading to architecture today but I do agree in terms with buildings having a personality and reflecting it when inside.
When reading Alberti’s passage he refers to materials of construction being from raw materials and utilizing them in the given space. Also how the basis of the construction is more for durability and practical reasons, which almost goes against what Pallasmaa’s stands for. The Phenomenology is what stands for the first conscious experience when visiting a place which stays in your memory and with you for next encounters.
